Bryce Backaus Crushed it as Spring Creekís Super Series round 3, the Donny Schmit Memorial Race!

6/1/2022

Bryce Backaus crushed it as Spring Creek¬ís Super Series round 3, the Donny Schmit Memoria l race, the first day of the Memorial Day weekend double-header.¬ ¬ Backaus w n 5 out of the 6 motos he entered, with victories in 25 Plus A, 250 A and Open A.¬ ¬ Jake Loberg was able to wrest one win away from him in the 25+ class but his third place finish in the other moto left him second on the podium.¬

Saturday’s race had a very impressive entry list with around 800 entries and was one of the largest totals in quite some time. The track was in fair condition to start out the day but an early rain shower did its work around moto 3 and left the track in a greasy state for some of the next motos at the top of the order. But some track maintenance and the absense of any further precipitation led to better conditions later in the day.  Entries were down some for Monday’s und and the track was in much better shape.

See below summaries of a few classes from Sunday’s competition:

The 250 A class got off to a rough start as Josh Boaz slid out in turn one right in front of the pack.¬ Boaz was hit but not serious ly hurt and declined to participate for the rest of the moto.¬ Casey Paider¬ Seth Fischer snared the lead in the res ulting confusion and led lap one but Cameron Skaalerud was on his tail and took over at the front on lap two.¬ He led until the final lap but Backaus was closing and swooped into the lead after pressuring Skaalerud for a while.

Brennan Myers grabbed the Pro Kart Indoors holeshot money in moto two and did well to lead for the first lap but had Skaalerud and Backaus in tow as he started the next lap.¬ Backaus put the hammer down and slipped by Skaalerud on the bigger downhill then zapped Myers coming down Collarbone.¬ ¬ Then it was cle sailing and sunny skies on the way to the win.¬ Skaalerud and then Bailey Kroone both got by Myers in the next couple laps to take the 2-3 spots on the podium while Fischer ended up fifth.

Levi Dertien jumped out to lead the first moto of 250 B but Garrett Becker was leading at the end of lap one and Ronnie Orres tailed him across the line. Becker crashed coming down t he big hill on the west side of the track and dropped back. Orres took over control of the lead the n with Wyatt McGrath in support .  Becker took another digger and left t e moto with bike issues and was removed from the equation. McGrath moved up on Orres and made the move for the lead on the last lap.  Or es maintained pace to keep the gap small but ended up with second over Drake Dionne.  Brodie O’Connor and Eva Christian rounded out the top five.

Moto two was Orres’ time in the sun as he led every lap and took the win over McGrath. Dionne held on for third despite some l ate race efforts by Brandon Espe-tiegs to challenge him and Tanner Schlegel rounded out the top five.

Carson Wittman should off some considerable skill in the 65cc 7-11 and 85cc 9-11 class with a clean sweep of all four motos.¬ Looks like a lo ng summer ahead for his competition in those classes.¬
